Within the project “Return Her Name,” George Eliot and 24 other female writers will be published under their real names. #FemFacts
Victorian era writer Mary Ann Evans stands behind the novel, Middlemarch. Nevertheless, for most of her life, she was known by a pseudonym — under the name George Eliot, which she adopted to conceal her gender in an era when women were excluded from intellectual circles. Soon, George Eliot and 24 other female writers will be published under their real names. Evans's famous work is among the 25 books that were originally published under a male pseudonym, and today they are being reissued under the real names of their female authors. Other authors include George Sand and George Egerton.
☄️ Even today, many women write under pseudonyms, especially in genres dominated by men, such as science fiction and crime. One well-known example of this is J.K. Rowling — the author recalled in a 2017 interview with CNN that publishers advised her to use initials instead of her full name when publishing the first Harry Potter book, as it would “appeal more to boys and girls.”.
